Firefighter Entrance Exam

Announcement of Entrance Examination to develop a Firefighters hire list for the City of Sweetwater.

Applications will be accepted through the Texas Workforce Commission office located at 1105 Bell Street Sweetwater, Texas or you may e-mail Lisa Adames at ladames@coswtr.org . All Applications must be submitted by 5:00 p.m. on 
Tuesday, May 28, 2019.

A written exam will be conducted on June 3, 2019, at 8:30 a.m. at the Sweetwater Police Dept. Training Room located at 400 E. Ave A. Late arrivals will not be admitted. Those who pass the written exam will have further testing in the afternoon.

QUALIFICATIONS:

Applicant must be 18 years to 35 years of age.
Must be High School graduate or have an equivalent GED.
Driver’s License and satisfactory background driving record.
Must be able to read and write the English language. 
If candidate is not certified by the Texas Commission on Fire Protection Personnel Standards and Education (TCFPPSE), he or she must be eligible for future certification by TCFPPSE.
Preferably possess certification as an EMT-Basic or higher by the Texas Department of Health at time of appointment.  At or before the time of entrance exam, applicants shall provide either (1) an EMT Certificate issued by the Texas Department of Health, or (2) evidence of current enrollment in an EMT course approved by the Texas Department of Health; or
Be certified as a paramedic by the Texas Department of Health Services, or certifiable at time of appointment. PREFERENCE MAY BE GIVEN TO CANDIDATES WHO ALREADY POSSESS THIS CERTIFICATION. At or before the time of entrance exam, applicants shall provide either (1) a paramedic certificate issued by the Texas Department of Health, or (2) evidence of current enrollment in a paramedic course approved by the Texas Department of State Health Services
If served in the armed forces of the United States and received an honorable discharge, documentation must be produced (D D Form - 214).
Must be physically sound and free from any defect, which may adversely affect his/her performance of duty.
The resulting hire list will remain effective for six months from the date of testing.

Must be able to obtain a “C” Ground Water License from TCEQ within two (2) years.

Must know basic algebra and general math skills, computer knowledge, general knowledge of the operations of pumps, motors, chemical feed equipment, lab skills and knowledge of minor electrical repairs and trouble shooting.  This may consist of the use of an OHM meter for electrical trouble shooting.
Must be skilled in the operation of a tractor shredder and forklift.
Ability to sit, stand, walk, kneel, crouch, stoop, squat, twist and climb ladders and stairs.
Ability to work in various types of weather, including safely driving in inclement weather to report to work as required.

REQUIREMENTS:
Lateral Entry Officer Applicants are not required to complete a written examination as part of the hiring process and may be considered for appointment provided applicants meet the following eligibility requirements:
a) At time of application, each LEO applicant must be actively employed or have been employed as a full-time paid police officer, provided that:
i) The applicant is certified by TCOLE; ii) If not currently employed, the applicant must not have a break in service as a Police Officer of more than 180 days prior to the applicant's appointment date. Individuals with greater than 180 days break in service that have maintained the required TCOLE training hours, and provides a current psychological examination approved by the department and TCOLE may be considered for appointment as a LEO.
iii)   Has a total of two (2) years of active service for one or more municipal, county, state or federal law enforcement agencies that has at least 20 sworn police officers and handles a full array of urban police work (i.e., respond to all types of calls for law enforcement services).
iv)   LEO applicants who work or worked for an agency that has fewer than 20 sworn officers will be evaluated on a case-by-case basis.
v)    Be no less than 21 years old and have not reached their 56th birthday at the time they apply to be hired as a LEO.
vi)   Applicants must pass the Department’s physical agility course.
vii)  Applicants must successfully pass the Department’s TCOLE approve background investigation.
Compensation in addition to base pay:
Longevity pay:  $5 per month times the number of years of service
Education pay: $50/month Associates Degree
       $100/mo Bachelor’s Degree
                                       $150/mo Master’s Degree 
Retention pay:  $900/year after completion of 1st year  
      $1500/year after completion of 2nd year and each year thereafter
Certification pay: $50/month Intermediate
        $100/month Advanced
        $150/month Master
